Overview

Design Horizontal Analytics Platform

Created a unified analytics framework for ZOLL Data Systems serving four emergency medical services (EMS) products and three user roles. The platform consolidated disparate dashboards into a coherent system with reusable data widget libraries.

The challenge extended beyond visual design - I needed to create a framework flexible enough to serve different products (EMS billing, fleet management, clinical analytics) while maintaining consistency. Role-based customization let EMS agencies, fire departments, and system administrators configure dashboards for their specific needs.

Challenge

Create Unified Framework for Diverse Products

ZOLL needed to migrate four separate analytics products from Tableau to Birst while improving usability. Each product served different user needs - EMS billing, fleet management, clinical outcomes, with distinct data structures and workflows.

The existing dashboards felt technical and overwhelming. Customers requested simpler interfaces without sacrificing analytical depth. The challenge was creating one framework flexible enough to serve diverse use cases while maintaining enterprise-grade capabilities.

Platform Architecture

Horizontal Framework Design

Identified that analytical needs were consistent across products despite data differences: operational monitoring, performance analysis, drill-down investigation, and data export.

Designed systematic component architecture:

  • Summary cards for at-a-glance status

  • Trend visualizations for pattern analysis

  • Comparison tables for performance tracking

  • Consistent drill-down interaction model

Created guidelines enabling analysts to assemble dashboards independently while maintaining quality.

UX Design Process

1. Discovery

Interviewed EMS personnel, fire department chiefs, and system administrators to understand their analytics needs. Observing users revealed they spent more time manipulating data than gaining insights. I documented existing Tableau dashboards and identified pain points around data refresh, filtering, and customization. This research established the foundation for a more intuitive framework.

2. Analysis

Synthesized research into user journey maps and data widget requirement matrices. Analysis revealed that different roles needed different aggregation levels - executives wanted high-level trends, analysts needed granular details. I identified opportunities to create progressive disclosure patterns, letting users drill from summary to detail without overwhelming initial views.

3. Design

Designed a Birst data widget library displaying key metrics at a glance. Configurable layouts let users arrange widgets for their workflow. Progressive disclosure revealed complexity only when needed. The framework supported real-time data updates, eliminating manual report generation.

4. Testing & Iteration

Conducted usability testing with EMS agencies and fire departments, watching them complete analysis tasks. Early feedback revealed confusion about data widget customization, so I added inline help. Users requested preset templates for common scenarios. Iterative refinements increased task completion speed by 40% while improving satisfaction scores.

5. Delivery & Impact

Delivered comprehensive design specifications, data widget libraries, and interaction patterns to the development team. The new analytics platform migrated four products from Tableau to Birst while improving usability by 40%. Users completed analysis tasks faster, experienced higher satisfaction, and gained C-suite approval. The framework enabled ZOLL to launch new analytics products without redesigning the entire system.
