Overview

Establish User-Centered Information Architecture Through Card Sorting Research

Led comprehensive card sorting research with emergency medical services (EMS) and fire department personnel to redesign ZOLL's customer-facing website. The research transformed information architecture from product-catalog organization to task-focused navigation aligned with emergency responders' mental models.


The existing website mirrored ZOLL's internal product structure - users had to understand the company's organizational chart to find information. Emergency responders thought in terms of their workflows (responding to cardiac arrests, managing billing, training personnel), not ZOLL's product lines.


I designed and facilitated card sort exercises with actual first responders to understand their mental models, then restructured the entire site around user tasks rather than company products.

Challenge

Define Information Architecture Based on User Mental Models, Not Assumptions

ZOLL's website organized content around product lines - defibrillators, data software, billing systems. This structure made sense internally but confused customers who thought about their jobs, not ZOLL's organizational chart.


Card sorting research offered a solution: observe how emergency responders naturally categorized information. Rather than assume what made sense, I could document their actual mental models through structured exercises.


The challenge was facilitating consistent research across multiple participant groups while capturing authentic insights.

Strategy Shift From Product-Focused to Customer-Needs Focused

The card sorting research generated actionable insights that fundamentally transformed the website redesign strategy. Rather than organizing content around ZOLL's internal product divisions, the new information architecture reflected how emergency responders and healthcare customers actually conceptualized their needs and sought solutions.


The custom analysis methodology successfully informed a user-centered information architecture that directly shaped the marketing site redesign. UX Design Process

1. Discovery

Interviewed emergency responders to understand how they searched for healthcare software information. Observing their current website usage revealed frustration with product-centric navigation - they couldn't find solutions for their actual problems. I documented existing site structure and identified gaps between ZOLL's organization and users' mental models, establishing the foundation for card sort research.

2. Analysis

Designed comprehensive card sort methodology ensuring consistent facilitation across multiple participant groups. Analysis included dendrogram visualizations showing category clustering, item-by-item matrices revealing grouping patterns, and percentage distributions identifying strong associations. I synthesized findings into journey maps showing how different user types sought information based on their workflow needs.

3. Design

Designed a new information architecture organized around user tasks rather than ZOLL products. The task-focused navigation let emergency responders find solutions based on their actual problems - cardiac arrest response, billing management, training needs, rather than navigating product catalogs. Progressive disclosure revealed complexity only when users needed details.

4. Testing & Iteration

Conducted tree testing to validate the new information architecture with emergency responders. Early feedback revealed some category labels were too industry-specific, so I simplified terminology. Users successfully completed findability tasks 40% faster with the new structure. Iterative refinements ensured the navigation matched mental models across different responder types.

5. Delivery & Impact

Delivered comprehensive sitemap, navigation structure, and content organization guidelines to the web development team. The new information architecture transformed ZOLL's website from product-catalog to task-focused navigation. The CEO praised the methodology for uncovering insights that directly contributed to 7 competitive wins. The card sort process became ZOLL's standard for cross-functional user research collaboration.
